PHUNT 2014

It's time again to start thinking about burning off the holiday lard...

So, your pals the TRAIL DAWGS are kicking off the new year with our

11th Annual PHUNT 50K

DISTANCE: 50K only

DATE: Saturday, January 4th, 2014

WHEN: Start time is 9:00 a.m. Race briefing is 8:45 am. Course-closure time is 5:00 p.m. We will intercept and redirect runners who may not make the cut-off.

WHERE: Fair Hill Nature Preserve

START/FINISH: Tea barn near the corner of RT 213 & RT 273. The tea barn is on Ranger Skinner Drive, Elkton, MD 21921 (39.701762,-75.867244 or http://goo.gl/maps/y0bxh).

FEE: Zero, zilch, nada. We just appreciate your company. We do have more expenses than usual this year (barn rental, higher park fees, spendthrift RDs, plus the usual aid station supplies) so donations will be graciously accepted during on-line registration (via credit card) & on race day (cash). Thank you!

FIELD: Maximum 200 runners.

REGISTRATION: On-line only, now closed; no race-day registrations permitted.

Please note: The 2014 PHUNT run entrants lists and wait lists are full. There is no race day sign up.

Unfortunately we have a hard limit on participant numbers because of insurance cost categories. Truly, it bums us out to turn anyone away... the Trail Dawgs are very sorry for anyone wanting to run but not signed up!

AMENITIES: Deluxe runner accommodations. The Tea Barn and Aid Stations.
  • The tea barn will be dry, relatively warm, and has indoor restrooms.
  • In addition, alcohol (byob), will be permitted at the tea barn.
  • Each major aid station, approximately 8 miles apart (8/16/24), will be stocked w/ water, electrolyte drink, gels, candy, cookies, & chips.
  • At approximately mile 12, 20, & 28 there will be self-serve water stops.
  • While ample parking will be available, please consider car-pooling. After all, you’re going to be running around in the woods for at least 4 hours. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a fellow runner to commiserate with on the drive back home?

COURSE: That Fair Hill scenery we all love so much!

.....The Google Earth KML file is here.
  • In comparison to other parks in the mid-Atlantic region, Fair Hill is fairly tame.
  • The park has gentle rolling hills, intermingled with moderately steep climbs that will not exceed 150 feet.
  • The one loop course will start/finish on about 1 mile of asphalt/gravel road, which makes it 2 miles total.
  • In addition, there will be sections of grass pastures to run in that add up to approx. 2 miles.
  • The other 27.1 miles is single track. As a result, you should expect to be "lost" all day long.
  • In regards to difficulty, the first 8 miles is the easiest and the last 8 miles will be the hardest. Leave something in the tank until reaching the last major aid station (23.5 miles).

WEATHER: It’s the wintertime in the mid-Atlantic; expect anything mother nature has to offer.
Having said that, the average low is 24, & the average high is 42.

RULES: This is a USATF sanctioned event (insurance now necessary to meet park requirements). That means we must follow USATF rules -- no strollers, dinosaurs, or dogs will be permitted on the course with participants. Sorry -- the stroller and dinosaur rules are no big deal but we are dog lovers and sorry to insist.

FIRST-AID/EMS: Trail Run Medic, run by Keith Williams of Cecil County, MD.

PREVIEW RUNS: No markings. Print and bring your own map! Both start at Parking Lot #1, 4609 Telegraph Road, on Rte 273 across from the Fair Grounds.
